You know that really great photo you took last holiday? The one with the local thing and the typical regional stuff, that managed to capture the mood of the trip just right? The one you thought was such a darn good picture you should probably enter it into a travel photography competition?

Don't bother. It really wasn't good enough, as proved by the winners of this year's Travel Photographer of the Year contest.

The top prize went to British photographer Timothy Allen for his images of the mud mosque replastering festival and Dogon life in Mali, and his studies of individuals in Wales and Bhutan. The following gallery contains images of Allen's work, along with the winners of other categories and various other runners up.
