World's Most Expensive Cocktail

While we no longer feel the need to panic-buy at happy hour to get our money's worth, we'd still be hard-pressed to fork out for booze that's more than a year's rent.

However, if you're feeling a little flush/have more money than sense, then why not try the world's most expensive cocktail, which has been created by Salvatore Calabrese at the Playboy club in Mayfair, London.

Costing £5,500 ($8,824) per glass, the cocktail named Salvatore's Legacy, uses four ingredients, which mostly pre-date American Independence and the French Revolution: a 1778 Clos de Griffier Vieux Cognac (nearly the oldest in existence), a 1770 Kummel Liqueur, a circa 1860 Dubb Orange Curacao and two dashes of Angostura Bitters dating from around 1900.

Salvatore has amassed a cognac collection worth over £1 million, which is displayed at the Playboy club. He was meant to attempt the world record back in July, however there was a little snag when the £50,000 bottle of 1788 Cognac intended for the cocktail was smashed by a customer.

He said: "I was devastated when my bottle smashed and thought my dream of breaking the world record was over, but thankfully it has all worked out and nothing will stop me now."

The title was previously held by The Skyview Bar at the Burj Al Arab Hotel in Dubai, worth £3,766.52 and was a luxury version of an Old Fashioned, consisting of 55 year-old Macallan whisky, ice made from the water used at their distillery, an exclusive 'dried fruit bitters' and passionfruit-scented sugar. There were only 10 made and all were served in a glass produced in the French town of Baccarat emblazoned with 18 karat gold and the Burl Al Arab logo.
