The 8 worst movie dates
12 February 2013

Going on a date is tough. All that sibling listing and eating with your mouth closed, it's enough to make you want to stay at home with an endless supply of beer and cheese while softly weeping to whatever comes on your TV.

You're not alone. Here are the eight worst movie dates ever and please let us know if we've missed your favourite at the bottom.

American Pie - Nadia & Jim

We're kicking off with a film that perfectly captures the various trials and tribulations of being a teenager and here's the scene which brought the most squirms. After managing to get gorgeous exchange student Nadia, played by Shannon Elizabeth, into his room, Jim makes error after error after error. First, he teaches us that dancing is never wise on a date and then, well, ermmm...

Bridesmaids - Annie & Tyler

This sequence wasn't in the theatrical version but made it into the small screen cut. Unlike most deleted scenes, it's really rather funny. In it, we see our beleaguered heroine Annie spend an uncomfortable amount of time making conversation with her blind date's very odd young son. Thankfully, she sidesteps ever becoming his stepmother after then hearing her date tell his ex-wife how much he misses her. A disaster all round.

Happiness - Joy & Andy

The opening scene of Todd Solondz's pitch black comedy drama perfectly sets the tone for what's to come. In that it's painfully funny and incredibly sad at the same time. It's unarguably Jon Lovitz's finest five minutes as we see him dumped by Jane Adams, who features in another awful slightly NSFW movie date which you can see here.

The 40-year-old Virgin - Nicky & Andy

Poor Andy spends most of The 40-Year-Old Virgin suffering. Okay so we're not talking Sophie's Choice here but things get pretty bad for him. In what initially appears to be a rare highlight, he finds himself heading back home with an incredibly drunk, but readily available, Leslie Mann. However his luck rapidly turns when he gets into a car with her...

Taxi Driver - Betsy & Travis

It's safe to say that "porn cinema" has never been high up on our list of places to go on a date. Okay so it's actually not on the list at all. If we were ever in any doubt over this then Travis Bickle's awesomely awful date with refined political campaign volunteer Betsy helped to cement our decision. Watch and learn.

American Psycho - Courtney & Patrick

A date with Patrick Bateman is always going to be patchy at bestl although you can at least expect some fine dining. In this unsuccessful date with his mistress, he spends the entire time pretending they're at Dorsia when they're actually at Barcadia and trying to coax her out of a drug-fuelled malaise, which at least helps with his charade.

_______________________________________________________

Fargo - Marge & Mike

The worst kind of date is when only one person actually thinks it's a date. Take poor, deluded Mike Yanagita, arguably the most tragic character in Fargo, who confuses an innocent drink with old schoolmate Marge as something more romantic. Things get terribly, pathetically awful quite quick.

Knocked Up - Alison & Ben

After their initial one night stand, Alison & Ben would probably never have crossed paths again, had it not been for the small matter of a baby. Something that Alison shares with Ben on their first official "date". And here's a rather comprehensive lesson on how not to react to that news.
