The Portable N64

The Portable N64

The Portable N64
08 April 2014

Move over 3DS, there's a new Nintendo handheld in town packing an unrivalled level of nostalgia.

This is a fully portable N64, the glorious creation of console modder Bungle. Somehow, the talented maker has managed to fit the inner workings of the entire console into a hand-hugging controller.

The buttons of the original unwieldy tri-stick controller have been remapped to fit a finger-friendly design, nestled around a 3.5in screen. All of your dusty games cartridges slot into the back of the controller in familiar Gameboy fashion, and you can even switch between an internal rumble pack and memory card. While the battery doesn't quite stand up to modern rivals (just over four hours of retro playtime) it's still a staggering feat of electronic design.

This is apparently the fourth iteration of Bungle's handheld, and one which the designer will be looking to make more of. If you're interested in getting hold of one (who wouldn't be?), you'll have to get in touch with Bungle on the Bacman build forum.
