The Most Striking Images From London's Terror Attack Training Drill
There’s panic on the streets of London. But tell Morrissey it's OK - it's just a drill.
Though you might not think it at first glance.
In the first of a two-day operation, numerous anti-terrorist drills by the Metropolitan Police and armed services have been taking place across the capital today, causing plenty of bemused glances and worried looks from onlookers as 'lone gunmen' fire fake bullets, pretend bystanders get hit, injured people lay with limbs missing and SAS troops swoop in to save the day.
Codenamed Operation Strong Tower (someone’s been playing themselves a bit too much Call Of Duty), the exercise is the largest ever terror attack drill undertaken in London and involves over 1,000 police staff and emergency responders, all acting out a number of terror attack scenarios in a bid to ramp up security efforts in the wake of the mass shooting over in Tunisia - though the Met have stated the drills were planned before the Tunisia attack.
Scores of Britons were fatally wounded among the Western holidaymakers targeted this past weekend, fueling fears of an attack on home soil. As it stands, the UK's threat level remains on 'Severe', meaning 'an attack is highly likely'; just one below Critical, which means 'an attack is expected imminently'.
Here are some of the most striking images from today's exercises.
