Jurassic World congratulates Star Wars for beating box office record

Even in the world of killer dinosaurs and epic space fights, there's room for pleasantries.

Jurassic World set the box office record for the biggest opening weekend in May this year when it grossed $209m, narrowly beating the record held by The Avengers since 2012. However, as widely predicted, Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens obliterated it, grossing a huge $529m in the weekend just gone, to take the crown.

Now, Jurassic World producer Frank Marshall has posted a congratulations note to Star Wars director J.J. Abrams, LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy and the cast and crew for taking their crown and creating the "biggest opening weekend in galactic history".

It continues a theme of friendly 'well-dones' to new films beating previous record-holders: Marvel Studios posted their own congratulations to Jurassic World when it beat the record; in addition, it recalls a bygone blockbuster era, when filmmakers would publicly commend their friends' achievements. For example, this advert, from 2 December 1977 saw Steven Spielberg congratulate George Lucas on Star Wars beating Jaws in domestic video rental charts. Head here to see even more examples.

Whilst this is all well and good, particularly during this season of goodwill to all men, it merely reminds us that what the world really needs is for these two franchises to team up. Jurassic Star Wars anyone? How could that not be good?
