We all wanted it, but we never thought it would actually happen. The pool-of-drool-worthy prospect of a Trainspotting sequel - repeatedly, reportedly on-and-off again like a dragging sitcom romance - just seemed another case of the universe teaching us that we can’t always get what we want.
But then: glimmers of hope. Original actors began to talk up the prospect of a sequel. Ewan McGregor said that he had changed his mind on the project (he previously proposed that a sequel would be “a terrible shame”), revealing that he’d urged director Danny Boyle to revisit the city of Leith one last time.
And then, the news we’d all been waiting for: Irvine Welsh and Danny Boyle announced plans to shoot Trainspotting 2..
But we had to wait until now for more concrete details on the upcoming movie. Loosely based on Welsh’s follow-up Porno, shooting is set to begin today (16 May), and find its way to cinemas on 27 January 2017.
