Adidas pay homage to Run-DMC with limited-edition laceless Superstars

The limited-edition design reflects classic hip-hop heritage.

10 February 2020

The classic Adidas Superstar sneaker is a silhouette that has stood the test of time, so what better way to celebrate its 50th birthday than to join forces with a group that found themselves intertwined in the brand’s history?

Kicking off celebrations in style, adidas has joined forces with hip-hop legends Run-DMC to unleash two laceless versions of the Superstar.

According to Sneaker News, the classic silhouettes will drop on 13 February (possibly the greatest Valentine’s Day gift of all time?) and will be available in two contrasting monochrome colourways.

The concept of laceless trainers predates the rise of the group in 1983, with origins dating back to US prisons where laces were removed in order to protect inmates from hanging themselves.

The group became known for sporting the style and found themselves linked to the brand when they unleashed the track “My Adidas”.

The track was created to counter the anti-sneaker track “Felon Shoes”, discouraging youths from styling themselves on prison inmates.

Needless to say, Def Jam Records’ Lyor Cohen smelt an endorsement opportunity, bringing adidas executive Mr Angelo Anastasio to witness the rappers urging the entire audience to hold up their sneakers as the “My Adidas” was performed.

As of that show, a decades-long partnership was born.

The trainers are among a trio of limited-edition adidas Superstars being released this year - including a Hi-Res Red version of the classic kicks.

Priced at $90 each, this is a slick looking offering that might be Tricky to get your hands on. Those willing to hunt down a pair should Walk This Way into adidas.com on 13 February.
