Best Super Bowl Big Game movie trailers to watch
Andrew Williams
13 February 2023

You had to pay a cool $7 million to get a 30-second ad spot at the Super Bowl in 2023. That's more than the entire production budget of horror smash Get Out. But it didn't stop the big studios splashing out to promote their upcoming movies.

You typically see super-shaved-down versions of the full trailers, and occasionally something a little more unusual, during the Super Bowl breaks. We've listed the lot of them below. It's a neat way to get the feel of a film without so many of the outright spoilers seen in longer trailers.

These are the 11 mini "Big Game" movie trailers we got to see at the 2023 Super Bowl.

Scream VI

Release date: 10 March 2023

The slasher series that gave horror such a shot in the arm back in the 90s has gone the way of so many of the genre’s luminaries — an absolute shedload of sequels. Scream VI is a follow-up to 2022’s Scream, which took a respectable $140 million and, for a horror sequel, received solid reviews. However, with the longest run time of the series to date, can this new New York-based movie carry screaming on in style?

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Release date: 30 June 2023

The fifth, and presumably last, main line Indiana Jones film will be the first not to be directed by Steven Spielberg. James Mangold takes over. And with credits including Ford v Ferrari and Logan under his belt, could you ask for anyone better? Recent headlines on Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny have focused on the de-ageing tech used in the film. It will feature flashbacks that see Indie restored to his former glory. But will they stick out? There’s a brief glimpse in the Big Game spot.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts

Release date:9 June 2023

The 30-second teaser for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts paints a picture similar to that of 2018’s Bumblebee. Instead of showing us a whole bunch of Transformers involved in an epic battle, we get just the one — Mirage, who turns into a Porsche 964. Of course, if you watch the official teaser from December you get a totally different flavour — higher-stakes action, more classic Transformers and some new Transformers from pre-history.

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

Release date: 31 March 2023

More than 20 years after a dud take, Hollywood is attempting to make Dungeons and Dragons films a “thing” again. This one comes courtesy of the directorial duo behind the really rather good Game Night from 2018, John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein. Chris Pine stars, and the Super Bowl trailer tells us the tone is much more Marvel than Lord of the Rings.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Release date: 5 May 2023

Vol. 3 will be the swan song of the current Guardians of the Galaxy team, and there’s a suitably elegiac tone to this teaser trailer. Director James Gunn has also said this will be his last Marvel movie — but you could have guessed that given Gunn is now co-CEO of DC Studios. The trailer suggests the film will show us the origin story of Rocket.

Fast X

Release date: 19 May 2023

The official trailer for Fast X dropped two days before the Super Bowl, setting the scene for the 10th movie in the Fast & Furious series. Jason Momoa joins as our baddie, with Brie Larson warning Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto his family is in danger. Fast X has the series’s biggest budget to date, at $340 million — almost ten times the $38 million of the 2001 original The Fast and the Furious.

65

Release date: 10 March 2023

Adam Driver was in space. Now he has crash landed onto a planet that looks suspiciously like Earth, but Earth of 65 million years ago as there are dinosaurs hanging about the place. Directing duo Scott Beck and Bryan Woods are at the helm of this one — they co-write the brilliant A Quiet Place, although their last directing job was much less of a hit, 2019’s Haunt.

Creed III

Release date: 3 March 2023

A figure from Creed's early life appears, after a long stint in prison, and takes to the ring. However, his old friend Dame soon becomes his fierce rival and, well, you can guess how this one probably pans out. Michael B. Jordan stars as Creed once more, and also makes his directorial debut with Creed III. High stakes on and off camera.

Air

Release date: 7 April 2023

When is a basketball movie not a basketball movie? When it’s a film about the creation of the Nike Air Jordans brand, the line of sneakers made for sporting legend Michael Jordan. The least action-packed — and perhaps most robust — project in the Super Bowl trailer line-up, Air stars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and exudes that classic biopic vibe. Just this time it’s a biopic about the life of a pair of trainers, apparently.

The Flash

Release date: 16 June 2023

From this Big Game trailer, you could almost believe The Flash is a Batman movie. Perhaps that’s no surprise given the recent allegations surrounding star Ezra Miller. However, The Flash appears to be back on track for a release this June, and it looks exactly as expensive and flashy as you’d hope. For those not up to speed on this movie, both Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck return as Batman — made possible by the parallel worlds explored in this flick.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Release date: 17 February 2023

There’s not much need for an Ant-man trailer. The film will be in cinemas in just a few days. But Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania did feature in an alcohol-free Heineken beer ad. It doesn’t tell you much about the film, but it does feature Paul Rudd so is still worth a watch.
