Conclave and The Brutalist win big at the BAFTAs

Far from cinema's biggest box office hits, but the pair pick up 4 awards each.

The BAFTAs took place in London’s Royal Festival Hall over the weekend, with celebs from across the world getting glammed up to celebrate movies from a more Brit-led perspective.

Shortlist 2024 favourite Conclave was one of the big winners of the night, picking up both best film and Outstanding British Film awards. Among others. It was also the most-nominated of all this year’s films, earning a slot in 12 categories.

As well as being a bit more grown-up than some, Conclave cost peanuts to make compared to a Marvel movie. It had a reported production budget of $20 million, and made around $95 in cinemas.

Conclave did start popping up in cinemas again after receiving a solid bunch of nominations in the Oscars. And may well do so again in some screens, particularly if this strong BAFTA run is matched in its US counterpart, the Academy Awards, AKA the Oscars, held on March 3rd.

The Brutalist, a 3.5-hour-plus epic, was the other big winner and picked up four of its own awards, including Best Director for Brady Corbet. And both Wicked and Dune: Part Two cleaned up in the more technical awards, with two wins a piece.

The ceremony was hosted by David Tennant, who performed a bold opening number, The Proclaimers' I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles), while fully decked out in a kilt. It's quite a thing to behold:

But for now, let’s take a proper look at all those BAFTA award winners.
