Disney boss reveals projects have been canceled - talks superhero fatigue
Disney CEO opens up about new movies and shows...
The movie and TV world is awash with cancellations right now and it seems that not even Disney is immune to this issue.
Disney CEO Bob Iger recently spoke at a Morgan Stanley event - as reported by The Hollywood Reporter - and explained to audiences that while he is excited about many of Disney's upcoming movies, some tough decisions have been made about a number of unnamed projects.
“You have to kill things you no longer believe in, and that’s not easy in this business, because either you’ve gotten started, you have some sunk costs, or it’s a relationship with either your employees or with the creative community,” he said.
“It’s not an easy thing, but you got to make those tough calls. We’ve actually made those tough calls. We’ve not been that public about it, but we’ve killed a few projects already that we just didn’t feel were strong enough.”
Those words were enough to send the web into a frenzy and Reddit is already alight with what productions have been stopped. Although it's complete conjecture, the thread is pointing to the fact that Marvel's Armor Wars is a project that could be one of the ones that Disney is ending - mostly because there has been no word on it for some time.
Iger is upbeat about Marvel's future, though, reckoning that Deadpool & Wolverine “will be one of the more successful Marvel movies we’ve had in a long time.”
He also doesn't believe that there is superhero fatigue, saying at the conference: "A lot of people think it’s audience fatigue, it’s not audience fatigue. They want great films. And if you build it great, they will come and there are countless examples of that. Some are ours and some are others’.
"Oppenheimer is a perfect example of that. Just a fantastic film. Focus is really important. We reduced the output of Marvel, both number of films they make and the number of TV shows, and that really becomes critical, but I feel good about the team. I feel good about the IP we’re making."
