Lucky Cat Bar: What are its resident mixologist's signature cocktails really like?
Decoding the menu one drink at a time
Gordon Ramsey has 11 restaurants in London, including his signature Michelin-starred Chelsea restaurant and his Heddon Street Kitchen.
Last week, we headed to Lucky Cat Bar at 22 Bishops Gate to launch our new Guestlist series, where we show you the best hotspots in the city.
Lucky Cat Bar is London’s tallest restaurant, and - as you can imagine, with an accolade of this kind, there are views for days.
You may have heard of fancy restaurants having guest chefs where they do a kitchen residency, but have you ever heard of a bar having a guest mixologist? Yup, us neither. Until now, that is.
Lucky Cat Bar has invited Antonio Lai from Quinary in Hong Kong and all-round cocktail connoisseur to create some insanely lavish drinks. We tried each of Antonio Lai’s cocktails from his Lucky Cat Bar takeover to see what they were really like.
1. Scoop me up
All my childhood dreams have come true with this one. The Scoop Me Up is served in a glass ice-cream cone and topped with an actual bubble. Whether it adds flavour or not I have no idea but it was delicious. This cocktail is slightly floral and citrussy. It’s harder to describe this cocktail as it doesn’t remind you of anything else you’ve had before. The closest thing it approximates is a very jazzy version of a homemade lemonade.
2. Earl Grey Caviar Martini
This cocktail looked incredible - it had an Elvis-style quiff of foam on top, which was actually a lemon lime cucumber elderflower. It’s Antonio’s most popular cocktail on his menu back in Hong Kong. It’s a more subtle cocktail, and one thing I loved was that it wasn’t too sweet (call me Hozier).
For an Earl Grey cocktail, it didn’t taste overwhelmingly of tea (I am more of a coffee drinker these days, although still not keen on an espresso martini, oddly). It has a floral, citrussy sweetness that feels like drinking a healthy dessert. Plus, with all the different types of fruit in there, I’m pretty sure this counted as one of my five a day.
3. Oolong Tea Collins
I’ll be honest, I’m currently in my whisky era, so this was a highlight. The Oolong Tea Collins tasted like a smokey, boozy iced tea thanks to the Dragon Whisky and homemade Oolong syrup. I feel like this cocktail isn’t the most popular of the three - there’s no gimmick, no experiential experience like the other two, but it was a flavour stand out. This one is also available alcohol-free - I tried both versions and would recommend them equally, so it’s really player’s choice.
The verdict?
Antonio’s three signature cocktails are all under £10, so make quite the London bargain - especially at one of the most well-known restaurants in the city. If you’re looking for something a little bit different, it’s definitely worth checking his creations out whilst you can.
