One of the most anticipated games of the last 10 years is free on PlayStation Plus next month — just weeks after its full price release

Dragon Age: The Veilguard was only released in October of 2024 and was a massive release for EA. It saw BioWare finally deliver a sequel to one of its most popular franchises, which hadn't received a new entry in ten years thanks to an extended development process.

Now, less than six months after the game was released, it's coming to PS+ (PlayStation Plus) subscribers for free as part of Sony’s monthly subscription offering. The game will arrive on the service on 4th March alongside Sonic Colors Ultimate and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection.

Seeing such a recent release head to the service so quickly may surprise many. Yet, despite being critically well-received, the commercial results were mixed, with the game not hitting EA's sales expectations and, therefore, being considered a financial miss.

Having such a recent game drop on the service works in line with a recent statement on the PlayStation Blog:

"As many of our players are currently playing on PS5 and have shifted toward redeeming and accessing PS5 titles from the Monthly Games and Game Catalog benefit, PlayStation Plus is also evolving with this trend and will focus on offering PS5 titles through the Monthly Games and Game Catalog benefit starting January 2026."

Although the above quote is referring to the future, getting a PS5 game so close to its own release shows the intention to implement the above plan, and it feels like we're getting a taste of it sooner rather than later.

10 years in the making

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the follow-up to 2014's Dragon Age: Inquisition, making The Veilguard the fourth instalment in the series. Arriving ten years after its predecessor, it’s another excellent example of how long it takes to make a major AAA game nowadays.

The Veilguard picks up around ten in-universe years after the ending of Inquisition, allowing players to build the new protagonist with a fresh, extensive character creator, before continuing the story from the previous game.

Unlike previous iterations of Dragon Age, The Veilguard is much more action-oriented with more of a focus on free-flowing combat, allowing you to choose from three classes (mage, rogue and warrior) that have more subclasses within. Plenty of familiar faces drop in along the way, alongside plenty of new characters, as you and your party of misfits embark on a good ol’ fashioned adventure to take down Solas, the secret antagonist of Inquisition.

I've already played the game and had a great time; it's by no means flawless, but if you're on PlayStation and subscribed to PS+, you may as well check it out for nothing – who knows, you might love it.
