The Boys has been the most popular Prime Video show ever since the fourth season arrived in June, but it has finally been knocked off the top spot.

What replaces it, though, demonstrates quite how much Prime Video is dominated by its big hitters.

The Rings of Power, Amazon’s Lord of the Rings show, has leapt back to the top of the Prime Video TV chart in the US.

There’s no new content for the series out, but it is coming soon.

The Rings of Power season two will arrive on August 29, in what is the biggest release on streaming since at least, well, The Boys season 4.

This second season charts the rise of Sauron, and the (beginnings of the) creation of the rings of power.

“What we’re actually trying to do in season 2 is to get deeper in his mind. We want to start from a place where you’re understanding what’s motivating Sauron,” says Rings of Power showrunner Patrick McKay.

There are eight episodes in the second season, but don’t go expecting a full conclusion in this upcoming run. The original plan was for a five-season arc, and we’ve not heard any plans to veer away from that yet.

While no firm figures on how much the show cost to make have been announced, it sounds like the second season may have been even more expensive to make than the first.

Fans can “expect it to go broader, deeper and bigger, we’re going into more worlds, more monsters, more battles,” McKay told The Hollywood Reporter.

The first season of The Rings of Power cost a reported $465 million, not including the rights to the source material. At almost $60 million an episode, it’s one of the most — if not the most — expensive TV shows to date.

There’s a question mark over whether The Rings of Power has paid off. According to The Hollywood Reporter, only 37% of viewers actually finished the series in the US .

However, the first season is still the most popular Prime Video show ever.

A lot of fuss was made of Prime Video TV mega hit Fallout, with its 65 million viewers at the show’s debut. But The Rings of Power reportedly hit 100 million viewers in its first month. Will they return for season two, though?

This isn't the only piece of new Lord of the Rings content we're getting this year. Animated movie Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is coming to cinemas this December, and is set a hundreds of years after the events of The Rings of Power.
