We now know when Netflix's biggest shows will be released
Ready for the second season of Squid Game to finally hit Netflix?
Netflix has announced when many of the biggest shows of 2024 will be out.
There’s good news and bad news. First, the list includes much-loved series like Squid Game, The Night Agent and Cobra Kai. That's good. The bad news: these release dates are still super-vague.
As part of a recent earnings call with shareholders, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said those big-hitter shows will return in the second half of 2024, as reported by the Hollywood Reporter.
This also comes amid news The Witcher show is coming to an end. Well, after two more seasons.
Season five will be the show’s last, with it and season four being filmed back-to-back. The Witcher has had something of a troubled run of late, with star Henry Cavil leaving the production amid reports of a fall-out with show runners. But having two seasons to finish up the saga? There are worse ways to go out.
Netflix upcoming 2024 shows
Here’s a quick look at the shows we heard about during the Netflix earnings call.
The biggie is the second season of Squid Game, the follow-up to comfortably the most popular Netflix show ever. It racked up 2.2 billion hours in its first 91 days on stream, easily beating the 1.8 billion hours of Stranger Things Season 4.
We’ll also see the final season of Cobra Kai this year, and the second season of The Night Agent. That’s number six on the list of the most-watched English language Netflix shows, so there are plenty of eyes waiting for that one.
Emily in Paris will return for season 4, as will Outer Banks. True crime fans will welcome the return of the Monster series, whose next instalment will reportedly feature Javier Bardem and Chloe Sevigny in the retelling of the The Menendez Murders.
Want actual new stuff? As we already knew, western American Primeval is on the cards, as is a series about F1 legend Ayrton Senna, and an adaptation of The Perfect Couple by romance writer Elin Hilderbrand.
We already knew most of these shows were in the works. But as the weeks roll by, the second half of 2024 doesn’t seem all that far away. A glut of content is ahead of us.
As Sarandos explained in the earnings call, this wave of shows has been enlarged by the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes, which saw productions stalled.
What’s coming right now? Shows to look out for on Netflix include The Sandman spin-off Dead Boy Detectives (April 25) and A Man in Full (May 2), starring Jeff Daniels as a real estate mogul whose business is crumbling around him. In the meantime we'll have eyes out for more news on Squid Game season 2.
