Europe's annual football 'rich list' has been revealed, and it's surprisingly good news for Hartlepool United.
Oh, no, hang on, we got that wrong. Nope, Real Madrid are top again - for the tenth consecutive year - with Manchester United jumping up to second on the list, from fourth last year - swapping places with Barcelona. The rest of the top eight were the same as last year, with Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain filling out the remainder of the top five. The Premier League again dominates the top 20, with eight clubs making an appearance.
The only new entries in the top 20 of the list, compiled by Deloitte and which looks purely at revenues accrued during 2013-2014 (so no debt considered here), are Napoli, Newcastle United and Everton in 16th, 19th and 20th places respectively. Meanwhile, the only club operating outside of the 'big five' leagues (England, Spain, Italy, France, Germany), was Turkish side Galatasaray, who take up the 18th spot.
Real Madrid coined in 459.5m euros in the year that they won their tenth Champions league - up 30.6m euros from the previous season. Their city neighbours Athletico Madrid also had a great year, moving up five places in this list to 15th as they won the Spanish League and reached the final of the Champions League.
The continued dominance of the Premier League was attributed to the huge TV deals, with Deloitte senior manager Austin Houlihan commenting "The Premier League's new broadcast deals have translated into big revenue increases across the English top flight...in fact, every Premier League club reported record revenues in 2013-14."
It's almost like the top clubs designed European competitions and top divisions to benefit themselves and maintain the status quo isn't it?
