‘Female Viagra’ Is Declared Safe. Despite Mostly Being Tested On Men Only

Around a week ago, a female equivalent to Viagra was approved by the FDA for consumer use.

Named Addyi, women are required to take the pill every single day in order to help boost their libedo. It was approved with a warning against the effects of taking the drug whilst consuming alcohol.

According to the FDA, having a tipple when you’ve taken Addyi could cause fainting, dizziness and low blood pressure. So not drinking is all good and well on the advise stakes... until you look a little bit closer and discover that the effects of alcohol on the pill were actually gleamed from testing the drug on 23 men and just two women.

Which is quite bonkers when you consider that it’s whole purpose is to aid the libido of ladies. We don’t have a degree in science or anything like that but we’ll assume it’s relatively counter productive testing a drug aimed at one sex on the opposite sex and expecting clear results?

But hey, what do we know.

Speaking about Addyi, Lori Brotto, a sex researcher at the University of British Columbia pointed out the different ways in which alcohol affects men and women:

“Gender differences in metabolism and toxicity of alcohol are well known, and women are more susceptible to toxicity effects than are men. As such, I think the negative interactions between Addyi and alcohol found in the safety study are understated, and in women taking Addyi, I would expect the mixing to more devastating.”
