A journalist filed a freedom of information request to watch Obama's GOT episodes
Could a legal tool help us gain access to Game of Thrones early?
President Obama has access to a unique pool of knowledge. He's the only man in the world to know:
- What's really in Area 51
- The codes to launch a devastating nuclear strike
- Whether Jon Snow really comes back to life
Yep. Barack "I'm much cooler than your national leader" Obama is one of the few people in the world for whom HBO has offered 'screeners' for the upcoming sixth season of Game of Thrones.
Screeners are often sent to media outlets ahead of a broadcast in order let reviewers or writers prepare material on the show. Such is the hype surrounding GoT, HBO doesn't need to work very hard to drum up media coverage, and thus it won't be sending out screeners for fear of potential leaks.
The show's creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss recently revealed that Obama was a fan, requesting early access to the new season - and who were they to say no to the leader of the free world?
It's an enviable position - one that was too much for journalist Vanessa Golembewski. The writer for Refinery 29 came up with a sly plan: by filing a 'Freedom of Information Request', she believed she could use this legal tool to gain access to Obama's Game of Thrones knowledge.
"If the president - and by extension, our government - is in possession of a file, surely that file is subject to my request to see it as a US citizen," she theorised.
"Obama's in his IDGAF years, in which he's joining Marc Maron for his podcast and running wild with Bear Grylls. Perhaps, in one of his final cool-president moves, he will thoroughly recap the first couple episodes of GoT in a vlog or something."
There's no word on how far Golembewski's request has progressed so far, but given that the information doesn't pose a threat to national security, she's hopeful she'll get a response.
We're keeping our collective fingers crossed that Obama records a reaction commentary, so we can smack our gobs in synchronised shock with the president of the United States.
Well played, Golembewski.
