Tony Robinson says a new series of Blackadder is "on the cards"
Big Blackadder fan? Then you may be glad to hear that Sir Tony Robinson has a cunning plan…
A plan which involves getting the original cast of the classic eighties period sitcom (Rowan Atkinson, Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry) back together for one last hurrah.
Speaking to The Sun, the actor and Time Team presenter said: "I do think a new series of Blackadder is on the cards - I have spoken to virtually all the cast about this now."
Traversing Elizabethan times and the grimly lit trenches of World War Two, the show’s mix of gallows humour, stiff British upper lip and severe nincompoopery (as sidekick to Atkinson’s Blackadder, Robinson’s Baldrick was usually the source of this) made for some of the best TV of the decade, also cementing the comedic genius of actors such as the late great Rik Mayall.
The last time the cast reassembled for the show was 2000’s Blackadder Back & Forth, a one-off special visitors to the Millennium Dome may remember being screened inside the landmark. The news also follows a reboot trailer of Dad's Army, another treasured classic BBC show being revisited for the 21st century masses.
It appears the risks of a new series haven’t been lost on Robinson, with the 69-year-old stressing he's keen not to blight the name of one of British TV’s most beloved shows: “Expectations for a new series will be high because people not only remember the original; they remember who they were when it was on. It’s a big danger.”
However, as he readily admits himself, they may have a problem with snapping up Hugh Laurie - who was reportedly earning £250,000 per episode for his time as the cantankerous star of House - joking, “The only problem is Hugh’s fee. He’s a huge star now - or so he’d like to think”
But if anyone can find a way around it, it’s Baldrick.
