Not seen A Quiet Place yet? Well, no worries, for you shall find no spoilers here, unless you count the news that there’s a sequel on the way, as one. The movie - which is still in cinemas, everyone - follows a family under threat of a mysterious unseen enemy that hunts using sound. Cue lots of very silent scenes of people trying not to walk on creaky floorboards or sneeze - it’s a great idea that surprisingly hasn’t been done before. It stars Emily Blunt and John Krasinski (who also directs), and, well, you should go and watch it if you like ‘good stuff’.
It’s also been a resounding success, making around $213.273m worldwide, so far (on a meager $17m budget, natch). So obviously a great number of movie execs’ eyes have been replaced by dollar signs, causing them to immediately and involuntarily greenlight a sequel.
Paramount Pictures chairman-CEO Jim Gianopulos said at CinemaCon on Wednesday:
“We’re thrilled to say that we’re already working on the sequel to A Quiet Place.”
That didn’t take them long. But then again, there’s lots to be told in the movie’s very specific world - writers Bryan Woods and Scott Beck have a load of ideas up their sleeves. Chatting to Fandango, they revealed their plans for a follow-up:
“It’s such a fun word. There are so many things you could do.
“There are so many discarded set pieces, too, just hiding out on Word documents on our computer. So yeah, there are certainly so many stories you could tell. It’s just really, at the end of the day, who are the characters in this and what does the situation mean to that dynamic?”
We’ll have to wait a tad to find out, but it’s highly welcome - and maybe this time those rude bastards in the cinema that talked through all the quiet bits will have learned to damn-well shut their big mouths. Christ.
