Ariana Grande to become an honorary citizen of Manchester

Manchester city council are planning to make Ariana Grande an honourary citizen of the city.

The announcement comes in the wake of Ariana’s tireless charity work following the horrific Manchester terror attack at her gig which led to the deaths of 22 people.

Under new proposals put forward by the city council, honourary citizenship of Manchester will be gifted out to those to make “outstanding contributions to the city”.

Council leader Sir Richard Leese said many people already consider Grande to be "an honorary Mancunian", following her move to organise the One Love Manchester gig, which raised almost £3m for victims of the Manchester Arena attack.

He said: "This seems a fitting moment to update the way we recognise those who make noteworthy contributions to the life and success of our city.

"We've all had cause to be incredibly proud of Manchester and the resilient and compassionate way in which the city, and all those associated with it, have responded to the terrible events of 22 May - with love and courage rather than hatred and fear."

Manchester City Council has also announced it will hold an event later this year to recognise the "great many selfless acts and demonstrations of community spirit in the aftermath of the atrocity".

Plans for Ariana Grande’s citizenship will be put forward on July 12.
