Artist wants to build house on the moon
29 May 2014

Back in 1999, Swedish artist Mikael Genberg proposed a rather outlandish installation project: Building a house on the moon. Then the financial crisis hit and investors dried out like the surface of the proposed lunar body.

Fifteen years on and Genberg is back, asking for your money to fund his ambitious - but entirely possible - moon house.

With a crowd funding target of $15,360,000 (£9,184,957), every dollar donated to the project will bring Genberg's little red (traditional Swedish Falun red, to be precise) hut with white trim 25 'moon' metres closer to the surface of the moon. More generous donations will receive additional goodies, including a 3D digital drawing of the house ($30), your name engraved on the house ($50), all the way up to a weightless flight trip with the artist ($100,000).

If successful, the house will be packed aboard the SpaceX's Falcon 9 set to launch in October 2015, flown to the surface of the moon. Upon arrival, the art piece will then assemble itself, thanks to a design by private space robotics company Astrobotic.
