Athletes are going mad for Tinder in the Olympic Village
"Likes dogs. Enjoys travelling. Can run 100m in under 10 seconds. Has the body of an Olympian."
Take 10,000 super-human Olympians. Add 450,000 condoms. Mix with one dating app. The results? A generation of the most athletic children ever conceived (well, if the condoms fail to do their job).
Tinder spokeswoman Rosette Pambakian told the Associated Press that matches in the Olympic village increased 129 percent over the opening weekend, with wider use across Rio "skyrocketing" during the first week of the games.
"A lot of the athletes here are using this app," said Sweden's Marcus Nyman, a judokan who narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in the men's 90-kilogram division - but did manage to land 10 matches within his first days of arriving at the games.
During the London Games, the Olympic organisers had strict guidelines in place around various uses of social media, to help protect the interests of the athletes. These were loosened for the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, with the national teams of USA and Australia being told there are no restrictions around using the dating app for Rio.
We can only imagine the potential 'humblebragging' rights of elite athlete's Tinder profiles: "Likes dogs. Enjoys travelling. Can run 100m in under 10 seconds. Has the body of an Olympian."
Here are some genuine Olympic Tinder users that have been spotted in the wild. The showoffs.
