Barack Obama has said that his wife will never run for office.
As we reeled from America’s controversial decision to elect a reality star as a leader, we looked desperately around for someone to right this wrong.
The internet rallied behind #Michelle2020 just hours after Trump’s win was announced, but the man closest to her has just had his say on why it won’t happen.
Speaking to Rolling Stone, he said: “Michelle will never run for office. She is as talented a person as I know. You can see the incredible resonance she has with the American people. But I joke that she's too sensible to want to be in politics.”
But before we all head into a pit of despair, he promised us that the couple aren’t going anywhere.
After taking a well-deserved family vacation, he and his wife will “continue to be very active” in the world of politics.
“I'll spend time in my first year out of office writing a book,” he said, before going on to explain that he intends to set up a training centre for the country’s next generation of leadership.
“[I want them to know] why climate change matters or why issues of economic inequality have to be addressed,” he said, adding that they also need to learn how to use digital and social media to their advantage, too. He could point pretty easily to FLOTUS’ Snapchat, to be fair.
Obama finished: “So I will continue to be very active, and Michelle is going to continue to be very active – and [on] the very thing that brought us here, which is our belief that when you work with people on the ground at a grassroots level, change happens. When people feel disconnected from the institutions of government, they can swing back and forth in all sorts of ways.”
Ain’t that the truth.
