After the worldwide success of the similarly themed Hunger Games, The LA Times is reporting that American network The CW, responsible for One Tree Hill, The Vampire Diaries and Gossip Girl, are in talks to create a Battle Royale TV series.
The cult Japanese classic, originally released in 2000, adapted from the book of the same name written a year earlier by Koushun Takami, was finally released on US soil earlier this year by Anchor Bay. It had previously been thought that it would never be released, due to the controversy the film garnered upon its original release: the storyline features a government-sponsored game, where students kill each other in order to win.
A US remake had been mooted for some time but nothing came of it. Even now, the LA Times suggests that talks are at an early stage and that Takami's permission will also be required for the project to proceed.
Fans are also concerned that CW's involvement will 'OC-ify' the story; however, it seems hard to imagine quite how they will pacify such a violent story - perhaps they'll attack each other with pillows instead.
What do you think? Bad idea?
