Fish and chips is one of those dishes people will tell you is good wherever you get it from.
Those people are lying.
Anyone who thinks all servings of fish and chips are created equal simply hasn’t been for a really good one.
Last year we brought you news of the shortlist for the best chip shops in the UK, ahead of the 2018 National Fish & Chip Shop Awards.
Well, those awards have now happened, so we can officially tell you who the top dogs are.
The top three are (*drum roll*):
Third place: Harbourside Fish & Chips in Plymouth, Devon
Second: Burton Road Chippy in Burton, Lincolnshire
And the winner is: Millers Fish & Chips in Haxby, North Yorkshire
That’s not all the awards, though, you better not be planning to stop reading. The best newcomer award went to the Malt & Anchor in Cirencester, Gloucestershire.
It just edged out fellow finalists Fish & Chips @ Weston Grove in Chester, Cheshire…
…and Quayside Restaurant and Fish Bar in Gourdon, Aberdeenshire
Now, if none of those are near where you live, fear not. There were local winners, too, and you can figure out the closest one to you below.
If it doesn’t look like there’s one for your region, it’s because your best one is one of the overall top three, so scroll back up once you get to the end.
Scotland: Cromar’s Classic Fish & Chips, St Andrew’s, Fife
Wales: Penaluna’s Famous Fish & Chips, Hirwaun, Rhonda Cynon Taff
Northern Ireland: The Dolphin Takeaway, Dungannon, County Tyrone
North West England: Fylde Fish Bar, Southport, Merseyside
Midlands: The Golden Carp Chippy, Redditch, Worcestershire
London and South East England: Henley’s of Wivenhoe, Wivenhoe, Essex
Central and Southern England: Captain’s Fish and Chips, Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire
There you have it. Figure out which of those is nearest to you, and make a note to head down there next time you’re in need of some proper fish and chips.
