It may be hard to believe it if you watch Cardiff City, but sometimes, football really can still be the beautiful game.
On the same weekend that Neil Warnock was arguing that Joe Ralls shouldn’t have been sent-off for a horrendously cynical foul because ‘it didn’t endanger his life’ a moment of high art took place during a match between FC Sion and Neuchâtel Xamax in the Swiss Super League.
With the match delicately poised at 0-0, 19-year-old defender Bastien Toma played an utterly sublime through ball for Ermir Lenjani, taking out 9 (nine) Xamax players in the process. Lenjani duly did the business, stroking the ball home to put his side one up.
Just take a look at this and marvel:
Sadly, it wasn’t enough to take the three points it deserved on its own, as Xamax recovered to equalise eight minutes later via Raphael Nuzzolo.
The game eventually finished 1-1 to leave Sion mid-table in 7th and Xanax at the bottom of the division in 10th. Frankly, they should give Sion the title now for services to aesthetic beauty and just be done with it.
Meanwhile, Toma, who was playing in midfield during this particular match, only his 25th senior game, may well be followed by a few more scouts from across Europe in the coming months.
Toma: remember the name.
