Blackberry smartphones just became a little bit more useless
Embrace your outsider status, Blackberry. It's your only hope.
The future is looking sour for Blackberry owners (there are still some out there, honest).
Back in February, Whatsapp ruined Blackberry's year when the messaging app announced it would be ending support of Blackberry 10 devices by the close of 2016.
Now Facebook, Whatsapp's owner, has heaped further bad news on the ailing smartphone company, stating that it will discontinue API support for Blackberry devices. In short, that means that all Facebook's apps for Blackberry (Messenger, the Facebook app) will no longer be available.
"We are extremely disappointed in their decision as we know so many users love these apps," wrote Blackberry's Lou lgazzola, leader of its app ecosystem and developer outreach team. "We fought back to work with WhatsApp and Facebook to change their minds, but at this time, their decision stands."
Blackberry is apparently looking for an alternative solution to this lack of support - but no timeline has been set as to when the lights will dim on the Blackberry Facebook app.
Who knows - perhaps the lack of WhatsApp and Facebook support could see Blackberry become the disconnected hipster phone of choice: tired of incessant updates? Get a Blackberry. Want a phone that's 'just a phone'? Get a Blackberry. Want a phone that none of your mates own? Get a Blackberry.
Embrace your outsider status, Blackberry. It's your only hope.
