Blackburn defender scores two own goals, gets sent off & Twitter laughs at him

Remember those mornings after the night before when you wake up, creak open your eyes, and then - slowly, very slowly - memories start flooding back into your mind. "Oh god...did I...did I really say that? Did I really do that? Oh no..."

Well, you're imagining what it's like to be Blackburn Rovers defender Shane Duffy this morning, after a night to forget in a match against Cardiff City.

It had already not been the best of starts to the season for the Irish star - after angling for a move following his Euro 2016 exploits, he opened the season by playing in his club's 4-1 defeat against Norwich, followed it up with an own goal against Wigan in a 3-0 loss last Saturday, deleted his Twitter account the day after, rejected the club's offer of a new contract on Tuesday and then saved the best for last against Cardiff.

He managed to score two own goals in the first 20 minutes of the game - one an utterly inexplicable shot into the bottom corner and the second a towering header into the net - before he received two second-half yellow cards to be sent off, with the second being given in injury time for kicking the ball away. Rovers ended up losing the game 2-1 and find themselves occupying bottom spot in the Championship after three matches.

As if that wasn't enough to raise the ire of Rovers fans, he ended the game without the black armband that all players were wearing in memory of anniversary of the death of the much-loved former chairman Jack Walker.

Meanwhile, scouts from several clubs understandably left at half-time following his horror show performance. We reckon he might get that transfer soon - although it's more likely to be a League 2 side than Premier.

Still, at least Twitter was sympathetic wasn't it? Wasn't it?...
