The 15 biggest box office flops of 2017

While 2017 was a year of some very strong films like Call Me by Your Name, Get Out and Okja, it also produced some real clunkers.

Using data from Bomb Report and Digital Spy, we’ve rounded up the biggest box office flops of 2017.

Typically the marketing costs aren’t even included in the budget totals, so even though some of these movies made a small profit, they really should have done much better at the box office to recoup their costs.

15. Ghost in the Shell ($60 million profit)

With a budget of $110 million, this science fiction thriller starring Scarlett Johansson should have made more than its disappointing $170 million. Plus, it suffered accusations of racism and whitewashing.

14. The Dark Tower ($52 million profit)

Starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, this Stephen King adaption made an underwhelming $112 million at the box office from a $60 million budget.

13. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets ($44 million profit)

Written and directed by Luc Besson (The Fifth Element), this sci-fi film took a meagre $224 million against a budget of $180 million.

12. mother! ($11.5 million profit)

This hugely divisive film split audiences right down the middle – and it even ended the relationship of star Jennifer Lawrence and director Darren Aronofsky. It took $44.5 million from a budget of $33 million.

11. The Snowman ($8 million profit)

This crime thriller starring Michael Fassbender got really bad reviews and took just $43 million from a budget of $35 million.

10. Patriot’s Day ($3 million profit)

Starring Mark Wahlberg, this film about the Boston Marathon bombings took a very disappointing $48 million from a budget of $45 million.

9. CHiPs ($1.8 million profit)

This spin-off of the classic TV series was real dud and took just $26.8 million from its $25 million budget.

8. Free Fire ($8.2 million loss)

Honestly this film starring Brie Larson completely passed me by this year – it took just $1.8 million from its $10 million budget.

7. A Cure for Wellness ($13 million loss)

This psychological horror was a major box office bomb, taking $27 million from its $40 million budget.

6. Detroit ($14 million loss)

Rave critical reviews couldn’t save this Kathryn Bigelow movie, which took $21 million against a budget of £35 million.

5. Only the Brave ($15.5 million loss)

Even though this film turned out to be very timely with the awful wildfires in California, this movie still only took $22.5 million against a budget of $38 million.

4. Suburbicon ($16.5 million)

This thriller starring embattled actor Matt Damon (and directed by George Clooney) took a shocking total of just $8.5 million from a budget of $25 million.

3. Just Getting Started ($16.5 million loss)

Despite attracting big name talent in Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones, we’re not sure who would want to see this movie. In fact, how did it even get made? It took just $5.5 million from a budget of $22 million.

2. Tulip Fever ($17 million loss)

This film was stuck in development hell for years and when it finally hit our screens, the movie’s producer Harvey Weinstein resigned in disgrace after allegations of sexual assault and misconduct. It took just $7.9 million against a budget of $25 million.

1. King Arthur: Legend of the Sword ($26 million loss)

This film from director Guy Ritchie was panned by critics (and had an inexplicable cameo from acclaimed thespian David Beckham). It took just $149 million against a budget of $175 million.
