The online world of Call Of Duty is a harrowing place. Young American children picking you out with sniper shots from, frankly, obscene distances, grenades going off left, right and centre, death everywhere. Horrible.

Alas, it's a simply superb franchise and with the new game, Black Ops, coming out on Tuesday a new batch of CoD virgins will enlist, and find themselves bullet fodder for days on end. Fear not, if you too are about to embark on your first CoD mission, or even if you're a veteran in need of some decent tips, here's what the finest in the UK gaming industry, and those that made the game, advise. Stop by combat training. It’s a new game mode for the multiplayer where you play against the AI. So you can play by yourself on the multiplayer maps, but it’s against bots.

When in doubt, dive to prone. When people are shooting at you, you can dive to the floor, which will throw off their aim and give you a chance to regroup.

Every bullet counts in Zombies. Don’t waste them because every bullet will give you points if you hit a zombie with it. Even if you don’t kill it. And ammunition is very limited in this game mode.

Reload at every opportunity. You don’t want to see the reload animation kick in because you’ve run out of bullets during a life or death stand-off.

If you get hit by the projectile from the crossbow, you’ve got a few seconds before it explodes, so run to the person who shot you and they’ll be killed in the explosion too.

Learn your maps and adjust your weapons. If it’s a larger map use assault rifles and sniper rifles, and sneak around. Don’t be afraid to sit in a corner and pick people off.
