Cloverfield 'sequel' trailer arrives out of nowhere
JJ Abrams loves to keep a secret.
A month after making off with every box office record in history with Star Wars: The Force Awakens - a film he wasn't allowed to talk about for years - Abrams' production company Bad Robot has lifted the veil on a new, previously unknown Cloverfield film.
Starring John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Gallagher Jr., film's working titles of The Cellar and Valencia had previously thrown off any notions that it was related to 2008's monster flick. The new trailer - with the new title 10 Cloverfield Lane - was recently shown at 13 Hours screenings, following which Abrams released the following statement.
"The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible."
The film departs from the found-footage style of the original Cloverfield, directed by Matt Reeves. Going by the trailer, Winstead looks to play a girl who attends a games' night in her boyfriend's (Gallagher Jr) bunker (weird), but when something starts happening outside, the boyfriend's father (Goodman) refuses to let them leave. For their own good.
