Some momentous news for fans of The Office here: a David Brent film is happening.
Produced by BBC Films, Ricky Gervais will be reprising his role as Slough’s finest the feature length film which follows the self-professed ‘chilled-out entertainer’ as he attempts to follow his dream of being a rock star 15 years since his redundancy from Wernham Hogg.
While he’s still a sales rep selling cleaning products across the land, as last we saw him, the latest faux documentary will focus on his (self-financed) UK tour, meaning we might get to hear some news tracks alongside those other utterly ironic classics like Free Love Freeway, as he embarks on long overdue stardom.
From the notes from the producers so far, the premise sounds textbook Brent: “He thinks it'll be like Scorsese filming the Rolling Stones, but it turns out to be a "where are they now" documentary. He has to take a few weeks off work and cash in a couple of pensions, because the session musicians in the band are costing him more than he's getting in ticket sales.”
So expect the usual dose of tie-grabbing awkwardness, just on a bigger scale than ever. Much like his former band, hilarity is a Foregone Conclusion.
Filming starts in 2015 with a global release set for later in the year
