Netflix's latest true-crime documentary series is going after the big boys
It's coming early in the new year
Netflix is basically a big old crime scene now, isn’t it? Just loads of crimes everywhere, crimes up top, crimes down below, and if you search hard enough; even more crimes. But hey, I like crimes - not doing them, but watching them - so having a load of crimes to crime, is criminal. Criminally good. Crime me a river, that’s what I say.
And now, there’s even more crime for you - it’ll be crime a dozen on the Netflix homepage in January, with the arrival of new crime documentary Dirty Money.
The show comes hot from the genius mind of Alex Gibney, an Oscar-winning documentarian, whose profilic output includes top-drawer docs like Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson and We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks. It’ll focus on the many scandals that float about in the business world, with each episode speaking to both victims and guilty parties, which I think you’ll agree sounds very juicy indeed. A key crime pie, if you will.
The series is going after the big dogs in the corporate world, too, with subjects such as Trump. Inc, Volkswagen and HSBC, with individual and notable cases including the disappearance of $20 million-worth of maple syrup in Canada. Spoiler: the programme gets it wrong because it was me! I was the maple syrup thief! I still have a lot of it left! It was a grave mistake! My dog is dead!
Each episode comes from a different director, including Fisher Stevens (from Short Circuit and Short Circuit 2, obviously) and Brian McGinn (who directed Netflix’s Amanda Knox), and will focus on a different instance of business naughtiness.
The show will debut on Netflix on 26 January, but if you can’t wait until then, then Neflix’s other new crime show, Rotten, premiers on 5 January. Read all about that must-see doc, here. Crime!
