Donald Trump has finally visited Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico will probably wish he didn’t bother.
After the entire island was devastated by Hurricane Maria, 16 people were killed, homes destroyed and the country was left without power, Trump preferred to ignore the disaster, and instead focus on the NFL.
But on Tuesday, he did eventually make a visit, and it may well be the most embarrassing event of his entirely embarrassing presidency to date.
The thing is, Trump doesn’t seem to feel embarrassment, because he believes everything he does is brilliant, the best.
But to everyone watching, both in Puerto Rico and America, and then further around the world, it was painful and offensive. Take Exhibit A, Trump throwing a few small packets of paper towels into a crowd:
Why did no one think of this before! Paper towels! That’s just what the country’s been calling out for! How did no one else realise until now that all you really need to clear up the devastation caused by a category five hurricane is a few packs of Plenty?
If you double up the sheets enough times, maybe you can even rebuild houses out of them.
But the embarrassment didn’t stop there. Oh no. You see, what happened next is that Trump started talking, and we all know how that usually goes.
Worse than that, he started talking without a teleprompter, meaning everyone was subjected to his moronic, directionless ramblings.
He first met with government officials, and here is what he told them, according to CNN: “Every death is a horror, but if you look at a real catastrophe like Katrina, and you look at the tremendous — hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people that died, and you look at what happened here, with really a storm that was just totally overpowering, nobody’s ever seen anything like this.
“What is your death count as of this moment? 17? 16 people certified, 16 people versus in the thousands. You can be very proud of all of your people and all of our people working together. Sixteen versus literally thousands of people. You can be very proud. Everybody around this table and everybody watching can really be very proud of what’s taken place in Puerto Rico.”
It’s hard to even know where to begin. Telling them they should be proud of a hurricane hitting? Saying it isn’t really that bad, because fewer people died than during Katrina? This barely makes sense, to be honest, and then it gets worse.
He later jokes to a crowd: “You’ve thrown our budget a little out of whack. We’ve spent a lot of money on Puerto Rico.”
Hilarious! How dare Puerto Rico mess up Trump’s precious budgets by getting hit by a hurricane! What bants!
All of this comes alongside the President’s frankly extremely predictable, but still disgusting response to the mass shooting in Las Vegas, in which once again there is a gulf of difference between how he reacts to terrorism carried out by a Muslim and by a white non-Muslim.
