Dr Dre is no stranger to true life music movies - he was a producer on the 2015 NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton, which as you’ll recall, was really rather good indeed. So news he’s planning another one isn’t on the bad end of the scale, that’s for sure.
In his sights this time is Motown legend Marvin Gaye, and it looks like it’s set to go ahead, after a bunch of other hopefuls hit a dead end while trying to get the movie made.
Jamie Foxx originally scored the rights to Gaye’s music back in 2016 for a planned series, but it never materialised, and nothing has been heard on it since. Others who’ve tried to get a movie made include F. Gary Gray, Cameron Crowe, Scott Rudin, Lenny Kravitz and James Gandolfini, but none of them were ever approved by Gaye’s estate.
But now it seems that they’ve given the go-ahead to Dre, who will presumably produce the film, which had better feature the entirety of Sexual Healing at least thirty times. Strangely, Dre is represented by the same legal firm that defended Robin Thicke and Pharrell during their court case with the Gaye estate over claims they ripped-off ‘Blurred Lines’ back in 2015 - so it’s a surprise they were cool with Dre taking the reins on the movie. Still, the estate did win, so maybe it’s all very expensive water under the proverbial bridge.
As of yet, there’s no word on a release date for the movie (’What’s Going On’), but expect the ball to commence rolling imminently.
