Edgar Wright has teased the possibility of Hot Fuzz 2
The greatest buddy cop film of all time... Part 2?
So… here’s the thing.
Hot Fuzz is a perfect movie.
Not the greatest film (even though it is the best in The Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy), or the funniest film. We’re not even saying Hot Fuzz should have got an Oscar.
We’re saying in terms of what Hot Fuzz set out to do, and what Hot Fuzz achieved, it is a perfect film.
We’re not the only ones to say this either. Hot Fuzz is near flawless in its execution, delightfully skewering the buddy cop movie genre (the best movie genre there is), while also being a fun romp in its own right.
So, with Edgar Wright doing the press rounds for his new film Baby Driver, it’s no surprise people have been asking him to write and direct a sequel to his 2007 masterpiece.
Talking to website Movieweb if there any chance we could see a Hot Fuzz sequel, the filmmaker didn’t rule out returning to the buddy cop world.
“I’ve definitely had some ideas and me and Simon have even talked about it at points, but it’s that thing of, do I want to spend three years of my life doing that?”, Wright said.
“Or do I wanna, if I have the opportunity to tell a new story, would I do that? If somebody said to me, if Baby Driver 2, if that kind of came up, it would be like, ‘I have ideas’. I would never say never, and you’re not wrong to say that that’s the one that you could do further installments.”
But while Wright give hope in one hand, he taketh away in the other.
“I think the thing with sequels is that I’ve always been looking for what’s next? And the thing with any movie is, it’s going to take up at least two years of your life. Maybe three. So, when you’ve got youth on your side, and I’m already in my forties now, it’s like, I guess I would rather be telling new stories than revisiting old ones.”
Elaborating further, Wright even explained why comedy film sequels rarely match up to their forefathers.
“Hot Fuzz I think is the only one of the Cornetto trilogy that you could do a follow-up. The tricky thing with a lot of sequels, and especially comedy sequels, is once characters have finished an arc. You know, in Hot Fuzz Danny Butterman especially, Nicholas Angel becomes less of an automaton and becomes more human and Nick Frost’s character becomes less of a simpleton and more of a badass. So then the thing is like, when that’s your starting point for the next one, where do you go from there?”
So, to review: Edgar Wright has ideas for Hot Fuzz 2. But it needs to be the right idea to be worth his time. And comedy sequels are hard.
We humbly advise Universal Pictures chuck him £50 million so we can get this show on the road already. Give us some more hilarious duck chasing action.
