Lacoste celebrates octogenarian status with dapper new range
Unless you’re a very old man or an insufferable, ironic moustache-sporting hipster, it’s unlikely a story about a Thirties fashion label will instantly appeal to you. However, when that Thirties fashion label is Lacoste, then it is a different story.
Launched in 1933 by sartorially savvy French tennis player René Lacoste (nicknamed ‘The Crocodile’ for his on-court tenacity), the brand has spent a remarkable eight decades kitting out some of the planet’s most stylish inhabitants, and now, to celebrate its 80th anniversary, it’s releasing two new ranges.
Drawing on original René Lacoste sketches from the label’s archives (below), the 80th Edition Collection includes new takes on its iconic polo shirt (from £110).
The Unexpected Collection spreads its wings a little wider, featuring T-shirts (£55) and a fedora hat (£120). What’s more, the man at the helm of the Unexpected capsule is British designer Peter Saville, who, as art director of Factory Records, created record sleeves for the likes of Joy Division and New Order.
If Lacoste keeps conjuring collections of this quality, we can expect to see that little croc adorning shirts for another 80 years at least…
