Funny, smart and cool as hell, Emma Stone has risen rapidly through films such as Superbad, Easy A, The Help and will soon go supernova in Gangster Squad. We met the thinking man’s leading lady. She made fun of us.
Do you hover the internet looking for people’s opinions on you being chosen for the role?
I wouldn’t say hover, but I definitely looked it up. It affects me and I think about it, but there are years’ worth of comics and so many different versions, so you just hope for the best and try to sleep at night.
How are you dealing with your increasing fame?
It depends on my perspective that day. I’m not being harassed and I still have a relatively normal life. I was walking around London the past few days; nothing.
So no disguises yet?
No.
If you wore a disguise, what would you go for?
A Richard Nixon mask.
Was there an instant rapport with Andrew Garfield?
I think so. I had such a great time at the audition with him, and felt like I trusted him and respected him and liked him as an actor.
Does he flip between accents if he wants to turn on the charm?
Once the movie was over, I was surprised to hear his completely British accent, because on set, obviously, we were speaking in American accents, so in between takes he was pretty American.
Garfield’s done a stage play on Broadway. Have you been tempted to play the West End?
I would love to do stage. I grew up doing plays and musicals and improv and sketch comedy on stage. But then I have callouses on my vocal chords, which is why I sound like this [hoarse], so I lose my voice all the time. If I’m able to rectify that in any way, then I’ll definitely get back on stage.
What you need is a stage version of The Artist…
That would be perfect for me.
How long do you think you can get away with playing a teen?
I don’t know if it can happen any more. I mean, I’m getting to the bad side of 23…
You’re a veteran.
I’m literally the oldest woman that’s ever been in pictures.
