Jason Isaacs ruthlessly takes down Sean Spicer over Emmys appearance
"The aura of a giant festering abscess"
Sunday night’s glamorous Emmy Awards in Los Angeles saw some memorable moments and worthy winners, but there was no doubt about the biggest surprise of the night: the appearance on stage of former Donald Trump press secretary Sean Spicer.
There was much to celebrate: Donald Glover and Lena Waithe both making history with their wins - Glover as the first African-American to win in the best comedy series director category and Waithe as the first African-American woman to win in the best comedy series writer category, while the latter gave a particularly poignant speech to ‘my LGBQTIA family’. From a UK perspective, British Pakistani actor Riz Ahmed made Emmys history in becoming the first person of Asian descent to win Best Actor for his work on The Night Of, while Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror won a double award for season three’s fan-favourite episode San Junipero.
However, the former White House man’s unexpected appearance on stage during host Stephen Colbert’s opening monologue stole the show, when he wheeled out his own lectern to poke fun at the speech he made after Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony back in January, when he declared, in the face of all opposing evidence, that it was the “largest audience to ever to witness an inauguration, period – both in person and around the globe”.
However, not everyone found the appearance funny, with many celebrities and watching TV fans outraged at the apparent normalisation of his actions propping up and defending the Trump regime during its early days - Spicer resigned from office in July.
And it was Star Trek: Discovery and Harry Potter star Jason Isaacs who gave the harshest verdict on Spicer, when he posted up on Instagram on Monday afternoon
That’s right, the British actor went there, comparing Spicer to Joseph Goebbels, the propaganda man in Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime and referencing the brainwashing language of George Orwell’s dystopian classic 1984.
He wrote:
Hoping to forget politics for one night and bask in other people’s glory at the #Netflix#Emmys party and who do I spot at the bar late at night but the poisonous purveyor of lies #SeanSpicer. What were the Emmys thinking celebrating this modern day Goebbels, who was the thuggish face of Orwellian doublespeak just moments ago?
Three surprising things about him:
1) He comes about up to my nipples
2) He doesn’t think he should hide himself under a rock from shame for the rest of his life.
3) He’s deeply unattractive, from the inside out. Has the aura of a giant festering abscess. Strange, since he was so charismatic at the (elevated) podium.
“A giant festering abscess”. Don’t hold back Jason.
Perhaps Sean now needs his own press secretary to handle all the negativity?
