Who? Milburn
What’s the story? Barely a week goes by without a half-hearted reunion taking place, inspired by the millions made from acts trading on nostalgia - from Take That (who managed to forge an entirely new career) and the Stone Roses (who are currently attempting to do the same). But the return of Sheffield quartet Milburn was altogether different. Ten years after their debut album Well Well Well, which formed part of the Sheffield scene - out of which came the likes of Arctic Monkeys and Reverend & The Makers - and eight years after they originally split, they cautiously dipped their toes into the idea of coming back, when they announced four dates in Sheffield in April, just for a celebration of that milestone.
To their surprise, they instantly sold out, suggesting that, in a music world short of quality indie bands, there was, once again, a huge demand for a band just like them. Now, ahead of a full UK tour this autumn, they're back with their first new material in nine years, with Midnight Control, which premieres here exclusively on The ShortListen. They've picked the perfect producer to capture them, in the form of Bill Ryder Jones, and the track is inspired: rather than a quick fix, desperate-for-attention track, it's confident, relaxed and melodic - and it sets us up nicely for more music to come.
