We’re dead. Again. It happens with alarming regularity. We’re carefully lining up the enemy in our sights when a man we didn’t even see puts a bullet straight through our head. There’s no pain; just trash talk coming over our headset.
Still, we come back for more. Call Of Duty is a phenomenon. And Call Of Duty: Ghosts, launching on current and next-generation consoles next month, looks set to continue that run of success.
It’s set in the near-future where you’re part of the remnants of the US military. But it’s no longer limited to Earth-based battle – certain missions are set in space. Further to that, it’s no longer limited to human characters, either. At certain parts of the game you’re a dog – useful for sniffing out explosives.
The multiplayer has been tweaked, too. ‘Crank’ is a high-intensity version of Team Deathmatch – go 30 seconds without killing anyone and you will blow up.
Simple refinement of the slick gameplay the series is known for, rather than wholesale changes, is the developer’s goal. With the kind of success they’ve previously seen, who can blame them?
Call Of Duty: Ghosts is released 5 November
