Facebook has finally heard our calls to be able to tell people we don’t like what they’re saying without using words.
Sure, we’ve had the angry face reaction for about a year now but we need something that says we disapprove without seeming like we care too much. That motivational quote doesn’t make your ears steam, but you want to subtly let someone know you’re not that into living, laughing and loving. Thumbs down to their expression.
So the overlords are introducing a ‘dislike’ button, but only in Messenger at the moment.
According to TechCrunch, Facebook has started testing the reaction (which means only some of us can use it right now). But if previous reaction buttons are anything to go by, if it goes well in Messenger and is rolled out to everyone it may end up on our feeds.
Facebook has previously said they don’t want to introduce a thumbs down as they don’t want to bring too much negativity into their social media space.
The new reactions include both a thumbs up and a thumbs down, which Facebook told TechCrunch they see more like a “yes and no” reaction, rather than a “like and dislike.”
They added:
“We’re always testing ways to make Messenger more fun and engaging. This is a small test where we enable people to share an emoji that best represents their feelings on a message.”
It works in a similar way to the feature in other apps like Slack and iMessage and allows users to hover over a message and pick a reaction to it.
We imagine it’s kind of a godsend for group chats. You can let people know exactly which suggestion you’re saying yes or no to instead of having to explain yourself. Ain’t nobody got time for that.
