We all remember when we first came up with an idea for the ultimate plot twist: what if - wait for it - it turns out the whole story was just a dream? "And then I woke up". It's genius, I'll be a millionaire.
Despite subsequently then finding out that everyone else has come up with that idea, it doesn't stop it still being a useful device in the cinematic world. The dream sequence offers a candid insight into the deepest thoughts of characters, as this fantastic montage from Slate film editor Gabriel Adelman demonstrates.
Using the haunting soundtrack of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross' Hand Covers Bruise, Reprise (taken from The Social Network) interspersed with quotes from Waking Life, Spellbound and Inception, he's put together clips from 30 different classic films for a truly powerful video.
