If you ever wanted proof that something being expensive doesn’t make it good, you need look no further than the upcoming superfight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather.
It’s expected to be the richest bout in the history of the sport, yet many tickets reportedly remain unsold and folks are getting cold feet about forking out for pay-per-views.
The fight is in danger of being the sporting equivalent of one of those burgers with gold leaf; the one that costs £95 but is still to all intents and purposes a normal burger. You expect better from it because it’s cost you more, so relatively speaking it will seem worse and less fulfilling.
If only there was something even more ostentatious and even more useless to take our attention away from the flaws with the concept of the fight itself.
Wait, did someone say ‘special belt’?
The ‘money belt’ – yes, ‘money belt’ – contains 3,360 diamonds, 600 sapphires, 300 emeralds, 1.5kg of solid 24-carat gold, and alligator leather from Italy.
We didn’t even know they had alligators in Italy.
Anyway, here’s the WBC’s Mauricio Sulaiman introducing the belt and nearly dropping it as he lifts it up. Because you obviously want to see that.
It’s definitely got people talking, though not necessarily in the way some might have hoped.
I mean, look at the pride the boxing world is taking in this work of art…
Yup, this is going well.
