There'll be cheers on the streets of Whitechapel tonight. Not because they've finished the roadworks or anything - but rather because a new TV adaptation of Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell's From Hell is set to send a new wave of Jack the Ripper fans to their gruesome street tours.
The hugely successful graphic novel, previously adapted (though aggressively edited) for cinema in 2001's From Hell, is set to be turned into an event series by FX. Don Murphy, who produced the film that starred Johnny Depp and Robbie Coltrane, is set to return as the series' executive producer, while David Arata (Children of Men) have the unenviable task of adapting the 572-page graphic work.
According to Deadline, Murphy had always envisaged a screen adaptation of the novel working most effectively as a TV series: the work's complex structure and narrative style had to be 'hacked to pieces' in order to fit the film's two-hour running time. Given that event TV series are being snapped up by viewers and studios alike, Murphy felt it was the right time to do justice to Moore and Campbell's dark story, which follows the murders of Jack the Ripper and a strange cover-up of his malicious rampage.
We'll share news of casting and the screening date as soon as they haul themselves out of a dark production alley.
