Nikolaj Coster-Waldau drops huge bombshell about Jaime after 'Game of Thrones' finale
What's next for the Kingslayer?
He’s finally done it – after seven seasons, three dead kids and countless scheming, ruthless backstabbing and evil machinations, Jaime Lannister has finally tired of Cersei’s shit.
Jaime looked almost excited to be drawing together an army to send north to fight the White Walkers – it represented a chance to protect the realm from evil, and, for once, to know he was 100% on the right side of the fight.
So when Cersei called him the “stupidest Lannister” for even entertaining the idea that she might be serious in her pledge to help Jon and Daenerys in their war against the dead, he decided that fuck it, he would do it anyway – he would go on his own, finally leaving his sister behind. It took long enough.
After this momentous decision, Jaime’s actor, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, has been speaking about his character’s choices, and what it might mean for Jaime going forward. The headline news? He doesn’t think Jaime loves Cersei anymore.
"My subjects as an actor was 'This is it. I don't believe in you anymore. I don't believe in this, you and me. I don't love you anymore.' That's how I played it," he told Huffington Post.
“That was a great scene, really, because we’ve been waiting for that moment a long time. There were so many other times when I thought that would be it, time for him to pack his bags, but I guess she finally took it one step too far. He saw what he saw, and he understood the threat [of the dead], and he understood that clearly if they don’t all work together, they don’t stand a chance.
“And the fact that he knows his sister saw and recognized the same threat and her calculations led her to the exact opposite result — it’s just shocking. I don’t know why it took him so long to realize what the rest of the world always knew — that she is a crazy monster — but he finally did. And then he left.”
Further explaining Jaime’s decision, he told IndieWire in a separate interview: “[Cersei] has so little interest or regard for the rest of humanity. It’s all about just her power… He is truly disgusted by the way she acts. At this point, the threat is clearly real. He believes what he sees, he believes his brother, he believes Jon Snow, he believes Daenerys when she says there’s an army of 100,000 marching. That is so much bigger than anything they’ve ever faced.”
So what’s next for Jaime? Will he make it to the Wall? And will Jon and Daenerys accept or trust him when he gets there?
“I think he’s going to try to get up there,” Coster-Waldau says. “We see him covering up his golden hand because once he’s heading north, he’s in enemy territory, and it’s difficult to hide who he is when he has that golden hand. So I think he’s going to try to get up to some commander whether it’s Jon Snow or Daenerys Targaryen. We’ll see.”
It would be great to see Jaime team up with Jon and Dany – if he could bring Bronn too then finally all of our favourite characters could be on the same side.
Unfortunately, it’s looking like we’re going to have to wait until late 2018 at the very earliest before Game of Thrones returns for its final season – and more likely it won’t be until 2019. Oh well, plenty of time for endless rewatching, I guess.
