This 'Game of Thrones' theory could be absolutely gamechanging for Daenerys and Jon

Daenerys Targaryen can’t have children – the curse put on her by the witch Mirri Maz Duur left her barren, and now the dragons are the only children she will ever have.

That’s what Daenerys thinks, and it’s what she keeps telling others – including Jon Snow in this week’s episode.

And it’s true, or at least, it has been up until this point. Mirri Maz Duur’s blood magic ‘saved’ Khal Drogo, keeping him alive, but in a vegetative state, and took the life of Daenerys’ unborn child in return. Daenerys was forced to smother Drogo with a pillow, and she was left with nothing – until she emerged from the fire with her three newly-born dragons back in the Season 1 finale.

“Only death can pay for life,” the witch tells Dany, when she realises her child has been taken from her. The Mother of Dragons ties her to Drogo’s funeral pyre and burns her alive.

Daenerys suffered more heartbreak in this week’s episode, ‘Beyond the Wall’, when she saw one of her dragons, Viserion, fall to the Night King. The leader of the undead speared the dragon with a terrifying ice javelin, and there was shocked devastation in Dany’s eyes as she saw fire and blood pour from the wound of her dying child. She doesn’t even know yet that Viserion has been resurrected and brought over to the dark side.

However, there could be a positive to take from Viserion’s death – and it all links back to those words Mirri Maz Duur spoke to Daenerys back in Season 1 – “Only death can pay for life”.

Will the loss of one of her dragons mean that Daenerys can now have a child?

The subject of Daenerys and children has really risen to prominence again in the last couple of episodes. She has spoken with both Tyrion and Jon about her situation, becoming visibly angry when Tyrion asks her about the succession after she wins the throne.

And the idea of Jon having children cropped up for the first time ever in this episode. He tried to give Jorah Longclaw, since the Valyrian steel sword belonged to his father, Jeor. Jeor gave it to Jon after Jon saved him from the wight at Castle Black, but Jon thought it should return to the Mormont family.

Ser Jorah refuses, saying it belongs in Jon’s family now, and that he should pass it down to his own children when the time comes. Jon looks pleased at the idea – it’s like he’d never been able to entertain the idea of having kids until that very moment.

And who would he have kids with? Well, Daenerys. Their chemistry is only getting stronger with every episode, and they clearly care deeply for each other already. The Targaryens are of course not all that fussed about a bit of incest, and it would be a way for Jon and Dany to keep the bloodline going (when Jon eventually discovers the truth about his parentage.

Only Game of Thrones could make us actively root for an aunt to get together with her nephew, but hey, that’s the show we’ve all become obsessed with. Maybe there’s a positive we can take from Viserion’s death. Let this happen.
