Gascoigne's Life Story To Be Told In Feature-Length Documentary
The tears. The drink. The rehab. Every aspect of Paul Gascoigne's triumphant rise and equally spectacular fall is set to be divulged by the man himself in a forthcoming documentary, Gascoigne.
The Evening Standard reports that former England footballer will start the first of a three day interview shoot today, providing incite and context to subjects that will form the spine of the documentary. Interviews from unnamed contemporaries and archive footage will then flesh out a project that is seeking to portray Gascoigne in a different light to his famed tabloid appearances.
Slated to be released next summer to coincide with the 25th anniversary of England's defeat to West Germany in the 1990 World Cup - a game which saw the Gateshead-born player reduced to tears after receiving a yellow card and being ruled out of a final England would never reach - the idea for the project came in response to Gascoigne's own frustration with ITV's Being Paul Gascoigne. The feature focused the former New Castle player's life after rehab, overlooking his career and achievements into discuss his alcoholism and struggles to stay sober.
"We’re doing a very in-depth interview and everything will be framed around that," explained producer Nick Taussig. "We want to capture him in a slightly different way from the way he is captured by the tabloids."
