That old "films based on video games are dreadful" chestnut looks like it might soon be a thing of the past. After Michael Fassbender signed onto Assassin's Creed and Tom Hardy joined Splinter Cell, the subgenre gained an unexpected amount of class.
Ubisoft are hoping to maintain this streak by also developing a movie based on Ghost Recon, one of their most popular games to date.
In an " target="_blank" class="link-external" rev="84829">LA Times interview with Jean-Julien Baronnet, chief executive of Ubisoft Motion Pictures, he revealed that a pitch is currently being put together to adapt the military game for multiplex audiences.
The piece also suggested that the three films are set to put an end to the long losing streak of video game adaptations, lowlighted by Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Doom and Super Mario Bros.
"We're looking to bring both an independent and studio mentality to these movies, and both these actors (Michael Fassbender and Tom Hardy) speak to that," said Brad Weston, Chief Executive of New Regency Productions, where both Splinter Cell and Assassin's Creed are set up.
The projects will join other video game adaptations in development, including Need For Speed with Aaron Paul and, ermmm, Angry Birds.
What do you think? Will it work?
